The Skanner News, Brian Stimson, Posted: Apr 04, 2010 PORTLAND, Ore. -- Fair Housing Council of Oregon (FHCO), a statewide civil rights organization that educates and advocates against discrimination in housing, still logs 2,000 complaints a year on its telephone hotline. It also revved up its auditing of housing discrimination and found ‘disparate treatment rates’ ranging from the high 60 to high 70 percent. Diane Hess of FHCO said landlords employ a variety of discrimination tactics, including giving different pricing, omitting mention of specials, not giving out application forms and “they may not show you the same unit that they showed a white couple.” The Skanner News reports research that discrimination in housing and schools exacerbates existing racial inequalities.
