African-American women to learn about stroke risks

Here is an idea that employs both heart and soul to make Erie a healthier community. Advertisement On Saturday, eight organizations will join forces to help African-American women reduce their risks for strokes. "Knowledge is Power: African American Women Power Up to End Stroke" takes place at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, 236 E. 11th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Choosing a church setting for this program is smart. Women are active participants in the services and social activities at historically black churches, and heart health is a special concern for African-American women. We are all striving to create a color-blind society. But when a particular segment of the population is prone to certain health risks, it's smart to focus on education and prevention. "Every year in America, stroke kills twice as many African-American women as Caucasian women. The statistics are staggering -- in fact, African Americans are more impacted by stroke than any other racial group in America," Saint Vincent Health Center said in a news release announcing the program.
